lentil barley stew (especially for John Good!)

5 cups water
¾ cup lentils
¾ cup barley
tomatoes to taste- 2-4 large fresh, or 15-30 oz canned
2 tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
½ tsp rosemary
¼ tsp garlic powder
2 carrots

Simmer 60 minutes.
